How to Brief a Case
Master the FIRAC method with a simple, repeatable workflow. Use the free template to keep every case brief consistent for class and exams.
Read the opinion once without notes
Focus on the procedural posture, parties, and overall holding before you outline anything.
Extract the legally relevant facts
Identify the facts the court relies on, not the entire narrative. Capture the who/what/when that drive the outcome.
Frame the issue as a yes/no question
Turn the dispute into a narrow legal question that can be answered directly by the holding.
State the governing rule
Write the rule or test the court applies, including any elements or factors mentioned.
Analyze how the court applied the rule
Explain why the court decided the way it did. This is the reasoning you need for exams.
Conclude with the holding and disposition
Note the final answer to the issue plus whether the case was affirmed, reversed, or remanded.
